Corporate Affiliations Frequently Asked Questions

How do you obtain your data?

The information on companies and individuals is highly accurate as a result of our multi-faceted data maintenance strategy. We combine the latest technology gathering techniques and teams of highly-skilled analysts based in New Jersey, Georgia and India. This global approach enables Corporate Affiliations the ability to perform nearly 5,000 adds, updates, and deletes to our content each business day.

The latest in Web-extraction techniques are utilized to gather annual SEC government data (e.g. 10K’s) on publicly held companies within three days of filing. Annual financials, board members, executives and other data are extracted and filtered through internal edits and validations before entry into our database. These same techniques are used to extract key data from non-U.S. company annual reports. Additional data is mined to research corporate family tree information.

Over 550,000 highly-focused outbound phone campaigns are conducted yearly by our call center partners and internal teams to add, delete, modify and verify existing content.

What are the primary uses of Corporate Affiliations information?

  • Sales — Discover cross-sell and up-sell opportunities.
  • Business Development — Identify potential strategic alliance opportunities.
  • Marketing — Download contact lists based on your target criteria.
  • Executive Recruiting — Find employment opportunities and the right contacts.
  • Legal — Perform conflict of interest research.
  • Finance — Determine spend and discount opportunities.
  • Credit — Contact parent companies who can help with overdue bills.
  • Research — Understand the organizational structure of a company.
  • Fundraising — Use our corporate family data as leverage to find additional contributors.

Once you obtain the data how is the data updated and refreshed?

Our strategy calls for a comprehensive update on every record in our database at least once during the calendar year. Many receive multiple touches timed to data availability. Our Content Operations team makes updates to the Corporate Affiliations content daily and the web site is refreshed twice weekly for timely information.

Annual automated processes are used for data elements such as telephone numbers, area codes, URL’s and mailing addresses.

Extensive edits and validations at the analyst workstation level ensure errors are prevented before database entry. Data uploads from bulk processes undergo multiple checks prior to entry, and additional automated diagnostic reports scan the database for content that no longer meets timeliness requirements. Regular reports are run so updates can be made as soon as possible.

What steps do you take to keep up with the dynamics of people and company information that takes place in today’s marketplace?

LexisNexis maintains a dedicated staff to monitor over 100 global news sources every business day for executive and board member changes, merger and acquisition activity, IPO’s and delistings. The largest and most significant worldwide companies are monitored using this process.

The SEC.gov website is scoured daily for the latest public filings that may impact information our content. Direct company contact and web research is performed according to predetermined research schedules developed for maximum information availability.

Merger and acquisition activity is at an all time high — how do you keep up?

Corporate Affiliations has a dedicated team performing our exclusive MergerTrak™ process. Our MergerTrak feature let’s you search for both proposed and completed mergers that could affect your business. This process tracks and resolves mergers, spin-offs, and acquisitions from the announcement date to resolution and post-merger organizational changes.  Post-merger organizational reconciliation frequently takes an extended period of time.

For example: Cerberus Capital Management acquired Chrysler Group from DaimlerChrysler. Our team updated the company listing to show that Cerberus now owned Chrysler. However, extensive research is required to determine where the current subsidiaries fit in the new hierarchy, as well as tracking the executives who have been affected by the changes. This process may take a few weeks to a couple of months to complete.

What are the strengths of Corporate Affiliations data compared to the competition? They have many more individual company records in their database.

The primary focus of Corporate Affiliations is to provide customers with authoritative business intelligence on corporate families. Identify opportunities and expand your business using our current corporate linkage.

Our goal is and has been to capture companies with annual revenue over $10 million. The focus of Corporate Affiliations is not small business, but significant worldwide businesses that drive the world’s economy. Customers will find the individuals and companies they are searching for since the database covers nearly 200,000 of the most prominent parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates and divisions worldwide, and over 750,000 executives.

The ACT of Content Quality

ACT – Accuracy, Completeness and Timeliness.

Accuracy

Delivering accurate content requires the use of people and technology.  Technology can confirm whether data is present or not, but cannot judge right or wrong.  People can make that call but are a labor intensive and expensive solution. A balance of both solutions is the best approach for ensuring accuracy.

Completeness

The goal of an information provider is to provide comprehensive coverage of all data elements resident in their applications.  This does not mean that every available data field is complete but depends on whether the provided content meets the needs of the information consumers.  Every content provider should have internal programs in place to continuously look for gaps and close them.

Timeliness

There are few guidelines that govern this critical facet of content quality.  Depending on the category, data currentness may be minutes, as in breaking news headlines or 90 days after company year end for annual filings with the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC).  Private companies are not required to file many public-facing documents and therefore the timeliness of content is based on how well the information provider succeeds in contacting them.  Successfully meeting the challenges of providing timely information depends on how well sources are being monitored for change and responding as rapidly as possible.
